We have been extremely lucky with weather. With Southern England and Wales experiencinG flooding, we have only really had to deal with temps in the mid 50's and reasonable winds for the most part.
Tuesday we played the New Course here in St Andrews. A fine course, but without the history of the Old Course or the views of North Berwick it was a bit of a letdown. On the bright side both Bill and Don had their best scores on a links course. Tuesday night Bill is still fighting his allergic reaction to Scotland, so Don went to dinner by himself to the Dunvegan Hotel. It is run by an American, and the food was a welcome reminder of home. There is a picture of every famous name in golf on the walls, and a ton of American celebrities as well. Costner, Nicholson, Hope have all had a pint in the joint. So much to see and do there, we need to get Bill in there for a meal.
Wednesday, with Bill still suffering the Scotland effect, and Don with similar feelings, we attacked the Jubilee Course anyway. The course was not overly difficult, but the deep rough is so close to the fairway, we spent a lot of time looking for shots that back home were pretty good. The rough has been the same at all the links courses. I do not believe they ever have mowed it. They had two weeks of unseasonably hot weather which caused a growth spurt. Just off the fairway it was 3 inches deep, and a few more feet it was 6 to 8 inches. Brutal.
We have been hoping to get drawn for the Old Course, but we missed Wednesday and Thursday but we were drawn for Friday at 11:22.
With Friday coming, our health and the fact we want to explore more, we are going to skip golf on Thursday.
Don got up early on Wednesday and went to see the Olympic torch run through town. It was pretty cool, even better for all the kids whose parents drug them down to see it. Probably once in a lifetime for those kids as well as me.
Funny coincidence, when Don and his dad were in England 10 years ago, the World Cup of soccer was on and everyone was watching. Today, it is the Euro Cup, and it is all anyone is watching and talking about. The lead story on the news is always the soccer, then the floods then the Spanish bailout and the Eurozone crisis, but always soccer first.
