St Andrews, The Old Course. We were drawn to play at 11:20 on Friday. The weather forecast was not good, but it had not been good for weeks and we have been able to play in ok weather. We caught the shuttle to the practice range at 10:05. We hit 35 balls to "warm" up. At that time it was 45 degrees and very windy. We caught the shuttle to the first tee and arrived at 11:00. Still cold, very windy. We paid our fees, and then the rain came. The rain did not relent for the fist 15 holes. When we teed off it was 50 degrees, winds about 30 MPH and a heavy rain. Bill will tell his side of the story, but from Don's perspective here is how it went. I met my caddie Collin. We went to the first tee and yelled hello to Martin and Millie from somewhere in Scandinavia. I was a little nervous, but more cold than anything. My first golf glove was already wet and when I hit my 4 iron down the left side off the fairway, it almost flew out of my hands. It would be like that all day. After chunking my first chip and shanking my second across a bridge, I managed to make the green and 3 putt from 70 feet. Great start. After topping my drive on the second, I managed to find some semblance of a game, and managed a double bogey. From there I never tried to anything in the air, or hard. Easy swings to keep the ball below the wind and also so that it would not slip out of my hands and kill someone. I bogeyed 3, parred 4 then bogies 5. The last time I was here I birdies 6, so after padding 6, I remain under par lifetime on that hole. I 3 putted 7 from 100 feet, for bogey. On 8 the wind was howling straight in our face, making it the longest 155 yard hole I have ever played. I 3 putted from 80 feet, another bogey. I got lucky on 9, when my tee shot was just bad enough to not go in the gorse bushes and I made a parr. Then it got cold, still windy still raining, but colder. I almost drove 10, but 3 putted from off the green for par. All of the rest of the holes were straight into the wind. Drove it over the par 3 11th, but got up and down for par. Drove it in a bunker on 12, pitched out sideways and made a bogey. I parred 13 and 14, and made a 12 footer for birdie on 15. The rain stopped for two holes, I made bogey at16 with a poor chip ( I can't feel my hands anymore.). On the road hole, I hit my drive to left, hit a great shot into a hidden bunker short of the road hole bunker, and made bogey. The rain kicked in again on 18, I hit driver, 4 iron to the 331 yard hole, and two putted for a cool 83. A couple of times my caddie asked if I thought anything had changed from the last time I was here. I told him I really could not say, my head was down, just trying to walk, I never really had a chance to look around. The day was miserable, but tried enjoy it as best I could. Maybe next time I play here it will be summer, not Scottish summer.
