Friday night we drove to Hexham, England. We estimated 3 hours which turned into a 4.5 hour drive with the construction everywhere. We arrived at our accommodations, The Red Lion Inn in Newbourgh. Built in 1192, it is a real cool building. We were dressed in sweats after the down pour in St Andrews, and had to walk into the bar looking like hell while England was playing Sweden in a Euro Cup match. The looks we got from the locals!!! Saturday was race day at the Hexham Racecourse. It was Don's first trip to the track, but Bill showed him the ropes. Racing in a small town is an event, more about being seen than the races. The ladies were dressed to the nine's, with the gentlemen in suit and tie.....the hooligans on the other hand were in jeans and t-shirts (like we wore..oops). The temperature was not bad, but it rained a lot. Most people were fighting for the little covered space available. We placed a few bets, and other than the cost of the pints, we broke even. It was truly a spectacle. We spent the evening exploring the city, looking for Bovril and a decent meal. We at a real nice Italian place, but the cool thing was the Olympic torch came through here today and the bar tender got to carry it. She got to keep it, and brought it in, and we got see it up close. Sunday we are planning on going to see Wylam, Don's dad's boyhood home, then on to dinner with cousin Else in Newcastle.
